Hello and welcome to Conservative-Truths.com

Every week, beginning January 3, 2005, we will be posting a single entry with a little known truth about Conservatives and comparing it against the same truth about Liberals. Most of these postings will be referencing published statistics and reports. There will be the occasional anecdotal posting, but primarily they will be postings with links to the original reports and data.

The basis of determining who is a Conservative and who is a Liberal is determined in a couple of ways. If it is a person or organization being discussed then it will depend on their public comments about politics and policies. If it is a State being discussed then the label is chosen by the way that State voted in the 2004 Presidential Election, with the Conservative States being those that voted Republican and the Liberal States being those that voted Democratic. We know that this is a over-simplification and that there are many Liberals in Conservative States and many Conservatives in Liberal States, but this is the simplest and most common way to determine a State's overall political leanings.

For the purposes of this site here is a breakdown of the Conservative States and the Liberal States:

Some Thoughts On The 2006 Midterm Elections - November 9, 2006

With the Democrats taking control of the House of Representatives and the Senate and winning a majority of Governorships and State Legislatures it certainly appears that several Conservative States are becoming Liberal States.

Over the past couple of days I have been thinking what this means to the reporting I do on this site. If both Senators were originally Republican, but now one is Democrat would that make it a Liberal State or a Conservative State? If the Governor and the State Legislature are now Democratic, but both Senators are Republican would that make it a Liberal State or a Conservative State? If the State Legislature is Republican, but the majority of the State's U.S. Representatives are now Democratic would that make it a Liberal State or a Conservative State?

Using the results of a Presidential election as the basis of determining whether a State is Liberal or Conservative has always been a bit problematic with this site, unfortunately it is the only way to determine a specific category for the State that doesn't have to deal with the messiness of all of the other ways to determine a State's political make up.

So, for the time being, I will continue to use the results of the 2004 Presidential Election to determine whether to describe a State as being Conservative or Liberal. In two years when we have the results of the 2008 Presidential Election I will be revisiting this issue and then reclassifying States based on the results of that election.

Thank you.
